Nkomazi- Residents of Jeppes Reef in Nkomazi may finally find some relief after the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court handed down four life sentences and an additional 10 years to convicted rapist, Bongani Thembinkosi Nkosi (34).The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the heavy sentence, describing it as a step toward justice for the survivors and a strong message against gender-based violence.

Nkosi’s conviction follows a series of brutal rape cases that terrorised women in Jeppes Reef between 2016 and 2019. According to evidence presented in court, Nkosi and accomplices targeted homes at night, breaking in, assaulting occupants, demanding valuables and then dragging female victims outside where they were repeatedly raped. The court heard that the first incident took place on 18 February 2016, when Nkosi and his friends broke into a home where three women and children were sleeping. After demanding cash and cellphones, they dragged two victims, aged 28 and 16, outside while naked and took turns raping them.

Two years later, on 30 January 2018, Nkosi and another man again forced their way into a home in Jeppes Reef. A 19-year-old woman was dragged outside and raped by both attackers. In a third attack on 7 July 2019, an 18-year-old woman was asleep with her mother and sister when two men broke into their home. Nkosi and his accomplice demanded money before forcing the young woman into another room, where they raped her repeatedly.

Nkosi was first arrested in February 2018 after a community member recognised him when he was found trespassing at a house. Although the case was initially struck off the roll pending further investigation, police continued to pursue the linked rape cases. Their work eventually connected Nkosi to the earlier incidents. He was re-arrested on 27 June 2024 at a traditional healers’ initiation school in Mgobodzi, Nkomazi.Nkosi later pleaded guilty to all rape charges.

As part of a plea agreement, several accompanying charges mainly housebreaking, assault and kidnapping were withdrawn.SentencingThe High Court imposed:Life imprisonment for three of the rape counts10 years imprisonment for another rape countSome of the sentences will run concurrently, but Nkosi will effectively serve four life terms plus 10 years.
