Bushbuckridge Mayor Responds Quickly to Orpen Road Collapse

By: Tumelo Lebambo

A major route linking local communities to the Kruger National Park has been disrupted after a section of the R531 near Acornhoek collapsed, triggering an immediate on-the-ground response from local leadership.Within hours of the incident, the Executive Mayor of Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, Cllr Lydia Moroane, was at the scene alongside Public Safety MMC Cllr Mhaule, ward councillors and senior officials assessing the damage and coordinating urgent interventions.

The R531 is a critical route for both residents and the tourism sector, serving as one of the main access roads to the Orpen Gate. Its sudden closure has not only disrupted daily commuting but could also impact travel to one of the country’s busiest national park entry points.Initial findings point to structural damage likely caused by recent heavy rains, leaving the road unsafe for motorists.

Municipal teams acted swiftly to secure the area, closing off the affected section and installing warning signage to redirect traffic.Engineers have been deployed to conduct a full technical assessment, which will determine the extent of the damage and guide repair efforts. The municipality has also begun working with provincial authorities to fast-track the restoration process. While the closure has forced motorists to seek alternative routes, the rapid response by the municipality has been noted as a critical step in managing the situation and preventing further risk.

Residents have raised concerns about safety, particularly as wet weather conditions persist in the region. The municipality says timelines for repairs will be communicated once assessments are complete, as efforts continue to restore safe access along this key route.
