Mpumalanga High Court Sentences 25-Year-Old Serial Rapist to Life Imprisonment

By staff report

The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court has sentenced 25-year-old Comfort Sifundo Nkosi to life imprisonment for a series of brutal rapes committed across the province. The sentence was handed down yesterday following a lengthy trial that exposed a disturbing pattern of violent crimes against women.Nkosi, who was convicted on multiple counts of rape, kidnapping, and assault, terrorized women in and around the Ehlazatshe area between October 2017 and September 2023.

The court heard harrowing testimonies from several victims, many of whom suffered lasting physical and emotional trauma as a result of his attacks.According to reports, in one of Nkosi’s violent outbursts, he beat up his girlfriend with a stone at a local tavern until she became unresponsive and he pushed her with a wheelbarrow to his residence where emergency services were summoned and she was declared dead at the scene. In delivering the judgment, Judge Lindiwe Vukeya condemned Nkosi’s actions as “inhumane and calculated,” stating that his crimes demonstrated a complete disregard for the dignity and safety of women.

The judge further emphasized the court’s responsibility to impose a sentence that reflects the seriousness of gender-based violence in South Africa.“This court has a duty to send a clear message that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated. The victims in this case will live with the scars of these horrific acts for the rest of their lives,” the judge said.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence, commending the investigating officers and prosecutors for their dedication in bringing Nkosi to justice. NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said the outcome demonstrated the justice system’s commitment to protecting women and children.
