Durban – South Africa’s rising fashion stars dazzled judges with their creative interpretations of the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July theme, Country Allure, as the competition narrowed the field to 25 semi-finalists ahead of Saturday’s crucial judging round.More than 140 fashion design students from 10 colleges and private academies participated in the first round of judging, showcasing designs that captured the essence of country-inspired elegance while reflecting a distinctly South African identity.The entries ranged from sophisticated race-day ensembles to bold, avant-garde creations.

Many designers incorporated local influences through elements such as fringing, shells, beadwork and unique fabric treatments, embracing a theme that celebrates rustic sophistication, natural beauty, cultural heritage and contemporary glamour.Hollywood Foundation Marketing Manager and Young Designer Award judge Vuyisile Ngobese praised the exceptional standard of this year’s competition.”When the theme was launched, many people felt it would be difficult to interpret because of its association with international Western concepts.

However, it was inspiring to see how lecturers guided students to unpack the theme through a South African lens and explore what makes our country alluring,” said Ngobese.He added that students impressed the judging panel with their originality and technical skills, including fabric manipulation techniques and custom-designed prints.Renowned South African fashion designer and judge Kathrin Kidger also commended the quality of the entries.”

I think this year’s standard has improved tremendously. The students have gone beyond surface interpretations of the theme and produced garments that are truly outstanding. It has been incredibly inspiring to witness,” she said.The 25 semi-finalists will showcase their designs during a second judging event at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Saturday during the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge race meeting.

The field will then be reduced to 10 finalists, who will be announced shortly after the main race at 5:35pm.Racegoers attending the event will have the opportunity to view the striking creations on stage between races before the finalists are revealed.Beyond the prestige of competing at one of South Africa’s premier fashion and horse-racing events, significant prizes are at stake.

The overall winner will receive a R70,000 bursary from the Hollywood Foundation, cash prizes from Race Coast and Schweppes, and a trip to South African Fashion Week in Johannesburg. The second- and third-placed finalists will receive bursaries worth R50,000 and R30,000 respectively, along with additional cash prizes.

The competition forms part of the build-up to the 130th running of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, which this year boasts a record-breaking R10 million stake, further cementing its status as Africa’s premier horse-racing spectacle.
