Mpumalanga has become the first province in South Africa to receive and administer Lenacapavir, a new long-acting HIV prevention injection that could change how the country fights HIV.

The historic rollout took place on 5 June 2026, when 21-year-old Jane Mndebele from Embalenhle became the first person in South Africa to receive the injection. Her participation marks a major step forward in expanding modern HIV prevention options for young people and communities at risk.

Health officials say Mpumalanga’s early rollout puts the province at the centre of a major public health shift, as Lenacapavir is expected to strengthen efforts to reduce new HIV infections through more effective and longer-lasting protection.

This milestone reflects South Africa’s push toward innovative healthcare solutions, with new tools like Lenacapavir offering fresh hope in the ongoing fight against HIV and AIDS.
