16 Arrested in Pilgrim’s Rest Illegal Mining Crackdown

By: The Youth Voice Reporter

sixteen suspects aged between 18 and 41 have been arrested during a targeted crackdown on illegal mining in Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga.

Members of the Proactive and Combat Team carried out disruptive operations on Monday, 02 March and Tuesday, 03 March 2026, focusing on Majacks Informal Settlement and the Uptown area. During the operation, 16 suspects were apprehended for various offences including contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa, possession of illegal cigarettes, possession of gold-bearing material, possession of gold-bearing equipment and fraud.

Police also discovered illicit mining equipment abandoned at the scene. Items seized include steel balls, metal detectors, rechargeable mine batteries, water pumps, motors and other tools commonly used in illegal mining activities.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Pilgrim’s Rest Periodical Court soon. Detectives are working together with the Department of Home Affairs to verify the immigration status of those arrested.

However, illegal mining remains a highly debated issue in Mpumalanga. Following recent arrests involving illicit gold worth millions, many residents have taken to social media with mixed reactions. Some argue that illegal miners are exposing the province’s mineral wealth and believe reopening gold mines could create jobs and boost the local economy. Others insist illegal mining fuels crime, endangers lives and costs the country millions in lost revenue.

As law enforcement intensifies operations, the debate continues: is illegal mining simply criminal activity, or a sign of deeper economic struggles in local communities?
