Alarm as Teen Girls as Young as 15 Give Birth During Festive season

The Mpumalanga Department of Health has raised serious concern after teenagers as young as 15 years old gave birth at public hospitals during the festive season.Reacting to the figures, the MEC for Health described the situation as alarming.“It is deeply concerning that children as young as 16, and even younger, are giving birth.

This is not normal and cannot be accepted,” said the MEC.A total of 171 babies were born on Christmas Day 2025, while 141 babies were delivered on New Year’s Day across Mpumalanga health facilities.“All cases involving minors will be reported to social workers so that proper investigations and support interventions can be implemented,” the MEC added.

The Ehlanzeni District recorded the highest number of teenage deliveries under the age of 19 (12 cases), followed by Nkangala (7) and Gert Sibande (6).
