Mbombela – There was energy, excitement and a strong sense of pride as learners from special schools across South Africa gathered for the SASA II National Summer Games 2026, kicking off with a lively opening ceremony at Lowveld High School.
The five-day event is more than just a sports competition, it’s a celebration of talent, resilience and inclusion. Learners from provinces including KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Limpopo have come together to compete, connect and showcase their abilities on a national stage.
The opening ceremony had all the elements of a true celebration. Music filled the air as the choir from Kamagugu Special School delivered a powerful performance, while learners from Estralita Special School added their own creative flair. A colourful cultural performance by the Shibhelane Girls from Boschrand Primary School had the crowd on its feet.
But beyond the performances and formalities, the real stars of the week are the young athletes. From swimming and rowing to hockey, cricket and table tennis, the games will test not just skill, but determination and teamwork.
For many of these learners, the tournament is a rare opportunity to compete at a national level and to be seen. It’s about breaking barriers, building confidence and proving that ability is not defined by limitations.
