Several schools in Bushbuckridge became the focus of a coordinated anti-drug operation this week as law enforcement agencies moved in to clamp down on dagga circulating among learners.
An intelligence-driven search and seizure operation was carried out at randomly selected schools in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, including Hobo, Tamajane, Masana, Letshele, Sekhukhusa and Dutau.
The operation, led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services and private security companies, forms part of intensified efforts to rid schools of drugs and criminal influence.
During the searches, some learners were found in possession of dagga. Authorities confirmed that their cooperation led officers to alleged suppliers’ premises.
Police seized a substantial amount of dagga directly from suppliers, who have since been arrested. Officials say the focus of the operation was not only on confiscating drugs within school grounds, but on dismantling the networks supplying learners.
Authorities have described the intervention as part of a broader strategy to ensure schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
Parents and guardians have been urged to play a more active role by speaking to their children about substance abuse, checking school bags where necessary, and reinforcing discipline at home.
Law enforcement agencies and education officials say operations of this nature will continue as part of ongoing efforts to protect learners and restore safety within school communities.
