Lowveld Eye Institute Opens in Mbombela Amid National Health Insurance Rollout

By: Nokulunga Lebambo

As South Africa prepares for the phased implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI), provincial governments are under increasing pressure to expand access to specialised healthcare services.

On Thursday, 20 February 2026, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu officially opened the Lowveld Eye Institute in Mbombela. He was joined by the province’s Health MEC, Sasekani Manzini.

The new facility is expected to provide ophthalmology services aimed at addressing preventable blindness and improving access to eye care in the province. Residents in and around Mbombela have previously relied on referrals to larger public hospitals or facilities outside their immediate communities for specialised eye treatment.

The opening of the institute forms part of broader efforts to align provincial healthcare infrastructure with national NHI objectives, which seek to ensure access to healthcare services regardless of income level.

Government officials said public-private partnerships will play a central role in the NHI rollout, particularly in areas where public health facilities face capacity constraints.

While the launch of the Lowveld Eye Institute adds to the province’s healthcare footprint, questions remain about long-term sustainability, staffing, affordability, and how such facilities will be integrated into the broader NHI funding and referral system.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health maintains that it is working to improve healthcare access across the province and reduce backlogs in specialised services.

The opening of the institute comes at a time when healthcare reform remains a national priority, with the NHI expected to significantly reshape how services are funded and delivered in the coming years.
