South African Police Service has launched an investigation following a fire incident at the Schoemansdal Police Station in Mpumalanga.
The incident occurred around 12:00 noon on Thursday, 19 February 2026. According to preliminary reports, SAPS members stationed at the facility noticed flames coming from two office containers used as workspace and immediately reported the matter.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as all police personnel were on duty at the time of the incident.
The fire caused damage to the two office containers and other equipment within the structures. Firefighters and Emergency Services responded swiftly, managing to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the station.
An assessment will now be conducted to determine the full extent of the damage.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage and is currently under investigation.
Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, confirmed that a formal enquiry has been opened and that a specialised team has been appointed to probe the incident.
“An enquiry has been opened. We trust that the team will do due diligence and get to the bottom of what really transpired,” said the General.
SAPS has assured the public that operational capacity will be maintained and that measures are being implemented to ensure service delivery to the community is not disrupted.
Police have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
