Four Rapists Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Evander Kidnapping and Rape Case

By: The Youth Voice Reporter

Nelspruit – Justice has been served for a survivor of a horrific kidnapping and gang rape after the Evander Regional Court sentenced four men to life imprisonment for crimes described as among the most brutal acts of gender-based violence.

Khumbula Alfred Magubane (33), Nkosinathi Manana (34), Vusi Kleinboy Nhlapo (29), and Sibusiso Edward Namane (25) were sentenced on 28 January 2026 after being convicted of kidnapping and multiple counts of rape.

The ordeal dates back to Sunday, 24 February 2019, when a 37-year-old woman was ambushed by four men who had concealed their identities with hoodies. The court heard that the suspects grabbed the victim from behind, forced her into a vehicle, and drove away against her will.

During the abduction, the victim made a desperate attempt to escape but was overpowered and recaptured. She was taken to an open field near a local company, where she was raped by all four men.

The violence did not end there.

The perpetrators later drove to the Embalenhle area, where the victim was again raped by all four suspects inside a shack. Evidence presented in court revealed that the men allegedly discussed killing her, before one of the perpetrators intervened, preventing further harm and enabling the victim to survive.

A case was opened and assigned to the Secunda Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, whose investigators worked tirelessly over several years to track down and link all suspects to the crime. Through meticulous investigation, all four men were positively identified and arrested.

The accused were convicted on 02 December 2025 and sentenced in January 2026.

Sentences imposed:

  • Kidnapping: 5 years’ imprisonment
  • Rape (Count 2): Life imprisonment
  • Rape (Count 3): Life imprisonment

The court ordered that the sentences reflect the seriousness of the crimes and declared all four men unfit to possess firearms. Their names were also ordered to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Welcoming the sentences, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the investigating officer for dedication and perseverance.

“This sentence sends a clear message that crimes against women and children will be met with the full might of the law. SAPS remains resolute in ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice,” said Mkhwanazi.
