Police in Calcutta, Mpumalanga, are investigating the fatal shooting of taxi drivers from the Marite Taxi Association, following a violent attack that claimed the lives of two men on Wednesday morning.The incident was reported at approximately 10:00 along the Oakley Trust main road, where police responded to a complaint of a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers found the bodies of two adult males, both taxi drivers, lying on their backs outside their vehicles. The victims had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and showed no signs of life. Emergency medical personnel certified both men deceased at the scene.Two Quantum taxis, believed to belong to the Marite Taxi Association, were found parked nearby.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were shot outside their vehicles. Police recovered nine empty rifle cartridges at the scene. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.The bodies were transported to a government mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while police opened a double murder case for further investigation.Approximately one hour later, at around 11:00, police attended to another shooting incident at Alexandria Trust, also within the Calcutta policing area.
Upon arrival, officers found the body of an adult male lying face down in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.At the scene, police recovered 26 empty rifle cartridges and 11 pistol cartridges. Community members were present, but no witnesses came forward with information regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting.
The deceased is believed to be a taxi driver affiliated with the Mathibela Taxi Association.Police are investigating whether the two incidents are linked, although the second shooting is currently being treated as a separate murder case.
