Mpumalanga – The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a stern warning to all applicants of the Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant of R370 to use only cellphone numbers registered in their own names when applying for the grant.According to the agency, cellphone numbers and banking details are key requirements in the application process, as they ensure proper communication, verification, and payment to legitimate beneficiaries.

Mpumalanga SASSA spokesperson, Senzeni Ngubeni emphasized that applicants using other people’s cellphone numbers or banking details risk delays or disqualification. “Using your own cellphone number allows you to monitor your application status, receive important updates, and complete verification steps. Without verification, the application will be unsuccessful, and no grant will be paid,” the agency stated. The verification process is designed to confirm that the grant is paid to the correct person and to prevent fraudulent activities. Applications with mismatched or incorrect banking information will automatically fail the verification process.

SASSA further urged applicants to provide accurate personal information to avoid unnecessary delays. Once banking details are successfully verified and approved, beneficiaries will begin receiving payments from the next pay cycle. Those wishing to apply for the SRD grant can visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za and select either South African ID Holders or Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders to follow the online application prompts.
