Bushbuckridge – As part of a Legacy Project aimed at promoting social cohesion and nation-building, learners at Qokiso High School in Ward 12 received dignity packs, school wear and seedlings under the inspiring theme, “It is in your hands to make a difference.”
The initiative sought to uplift learners, promote dignity and encourage community partnerships in support of quality education.
The programme was attended by several community leaders and stakeholders. Speaker of the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, Ms Ruth Rakganyo, directed the programme, while SGB Chairperson Mr Ben Ngobeni welcomed guests and highlighted the school’s achievements.
Messages of support were delivered by Councillor Sylvia Mathebula, MMC for Social Development, together with the Ward 12 Councillor, who reaffirmed government’s commitment to caring for communities. School Principal Mr Mdluli was recognised for his leadership and dedication to achieving a 100% matric pass rate.
The organisers also acknowledged Mr Sbonga Mchunu and the Sun Riders MCC biking club for answering the call to serve local communities. Appreciation was extended to Chief Sibiya (Mr Chibi) of the AmaShangana Traditional Council and the traditional leadership for their encouragement and support.
Partnerships in advancing education were further strengthened through the participation of Mr Joseph Malamule from the Department of Education’s Mafemane Circuit, together with representatives from the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, the School Governing Body, educators, learners and the wider Ward 12 community.
Through oversight and public participation, the delegation listened to the needs of the school while providing practical support. Dignity packs were donated to help ensure that no girl learner misses school, especially during examination periods. A commitment was also made to return with three iPads to support the principal and the school’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences teachers.
The event concluded with congratulations to Qokiso High School for achieving second position in the Mafemane Circuit, despite facing numerous challenges. Educators and the School Governing Body were praised for their dedication and excellent work in improving learner performance.
Reflecting on the significance of the initiative, organisers echoed the words of the late former President Nelson Mandela: “Tata Mandela taught us to reconcile and serve the people. Umuntfu, ngumuntfu ngebantfu.”
