By Tumelo Lebambo MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Provincial Government has officially launched the 2026 Mpumalanga Premier’s Cup, describing the tournament as a flagship programme aimed at discovering young sporting talent, promoting social cohesion and stimulating local economic growth.
Addressing guests at the launch, the provincial leadership said the Premier’s Cup is more than a football and netball competition. It is a long-term investment in young people, creating opportunities for aspiring athletes while strengthening communities across Mpumalanga.
The tournament is a partnership between the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation and the Department of Education, with learners under the age of 16 competing from circuit level through municipal and district competitions before reaching the provincial finals. Community clubs and professional football teams will also participate, creating a pathway from grassroots sport to the professional ranks.
Government highlighted sport as a powerful tool for nation-building, youth empowerment and social development, saying it builds discipline, restores hope and opens doors for talented young people regardless of their background.
The province also celebrated Mpumalanga-born sporting stars who have excelled nationally and internationally, including Proteas netball player Khanyi Chawane and football legends such as Surprise Moriri, Happy Jele, Michael Manzini and others who continue to inspire the next generation.
The Premier’s Cup has received support from TS Galaxy, Kruger United, Casric Stars and The Bees Football Club, with organisers praising the clubs for helping develop local talent. Current players from the province, including Bright Benny Ndlovu, Innocent Mkhabela, Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi, Bibo Malatjie and Seun Tower Ndlovu, were recognised as examples of what young athletes can achieve.
Beyond sport, government emphasised that the tournament will generate economic opportunities by attracting visitors, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transport operators, informal traders and local businesses throughout the province.
Private companies and sponsors were encouraged to partner with government to grow the Premier’s Cup into one of South Africa’s leading sporting events and position Mpumalanga as a destination for sport tourism and excellence.
The public has been invited to attend the matches in large numbers to enjoy exciting football and netball action before the start of the professional league season, as organisers promised entertaining, high-quality competition.
The 2026 Mpumalanga Premier’s Cup is expected to become a major annual event that develops future champions while creating lasting opportunities for communities across the province.
