Mpumalanga Learners Get Hands-On Veterinary Experience at University of Pretoria Weekend CampLearners from Sikhwahlane, NJ Mahlangu, DD Mabuza, Prof SS Repinga, Shinyukane, and Ndindane Nkomazi Secondary Schools, under the Nkomazi West Circuit in the Ehlanzeni District, recently took part in a weekend “I Want to Be a Vet” programme hosted at the University of Pretoria’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Sciences Campus.
Mpumalanga Department of Education’s commitment to improve Learner Performance, learners from Sikhwahlane, NJ Mahlangu, DD Mabuza, Prof SS Repinga, Shinyukane, Ndindane Nkomazi Secondary Schools under Nkomazi West Circuit at Ehlanzeni District visited the University of Pretoria for an annual weekend camp for “I Want to Be a Vet” Programme held on 8–10 May 2026 at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Sciences Campus.
This enriching weekend camp provided learners with invaluable first-hand exposure to the Veterinary Sciences field through engaging campus tours, interactive sessions with various animals, and visits to specialised laboratories where they experienced the realities of learning and research in this profession.
The excitement, enthusiasm, and curiosity displayed by our learners reflected the profound impact of this initiative in motivating and inspiring future veterinary professionals.We further appreciate the University’s commitment to identifying and nurturing high-performing learners in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, while exposing them to career paths within Veterinary Sciences.

Held from 8 to 10 May 2026, the camp formed part of an ongoing effort to expose learners to career pathways in the veterinary sciences field while strengthening performance in key subjects such as Mathematics and Physical Sciences.During the visit, learners were taken through campus tours, interactive learning sessions, and practical engagements involving animals and laboratory work.
The experience gave them a closer look at what studying and working in veterinary science entails, from academic training to research environments.The programme appeared to spark strong interest among participants, with learners actively engaging in activities and asking questions throughout the weekend. Educators and facilitators noted the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the group as a positive sign for future career development in the sciences.
