Gunfire in Kruger: Rangers Confront Armed Poachers in Two Dangerous Incidents

Kruger National Park has once again become the frontline in South Africa’s war against rhino poaching.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed two serious anti-poaching incidents in Kruger National Park this week, highlighting the extreme danger faced daily by rangers protecting the country’s wildlife.

The first incident occurred on Thursday, 5 February 2026, in the Malelane section of the park. Rangers on patrol came into contact with suspected poachers. Although no arrests were made, rangers recovered a high-calibre rifle and bags at the scene , equipment commonly used in rhino poaching operations.

SANParks says the seizure represents a significant disruption to illegal poaching activity in the area.

A second and more serious confrontation took place the following day, Friday, 6 February 2026, in the Stolznek section of the park. During this engagement, one suspect was fatally wounded.

The incidents underline the ongoing and violent threat posed by wildlife criminals, as well as the bravery of rangers who continue to place themselves in harm’s way to protect endangered species.

SANParks has commended its rangers for their courage and dedication, reaffirming that the fight against rhino poaching remains a top priority. Anti-poaching operations will continue to be intensified to ensure the survival of rhinos for future generations.

Both incidents have been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.

As poaching syndicates remain active, Kruger’s rangers continue to stand as the last line of defence for South Africa’s natural heritage.
