HORROR AT MHLUZI SCHOOL: LEARNER STABBED TO DEATH DURING BREAK TIME

By: The Youth Voice Reporter

Shock and grief have gripped the Mhluzi community after a learner was brutally stabbed to death inside a school premises, turning what should have been a normal school day into a scene of horror.

According to police, the incident unfolded on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, during break time at a local school in Mhluzi near Middelburg. Learners were reportedly relaxing when three male pupils walked to the back of the school grounds, where a heated argument suddenly erupted.

The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into a violent physical fight between two learners,  a 20-year-old Grade 10 pupil and an 18-year-old Grade 11 learner. In the chaos, the younger learner allegedly stabbed the victim, inflicting fatal injuries.

Emergency medical services rushed to the scene, but it was already too late. The 18-year-old learner was declared dead, leaving classmates and teachers traumatised.

The suspect fled the scene immediately after the stabbing but was later tracked down and arrested by police. He is expected to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court in the coming days to face a charge of murder.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the killing, describing it as deeply disturbing — especially because it occurred within a place meant to protect and nurture young people.

“Violence in schools is completely unacceptable,” he said, urging parents, learners, educators, and communities to work hand-in-hand with law enforcement to stop the growing tide of violence in educational institutions.

As investigations continue, the tragedy has reignited urgent conversations around school safety, youth violence, and the presence of weapons in schools.
