Marite, Bushbuckridge – Residents in Marite are raising concerns after heavy rains this week caused new sinkholes to form near their homes, creating access challenges and safety concerns. The community’s worries date back to 2017, when a culvert was constructed along Madras Road.
At the time, the drainage system caused water to accumulate, and over the years, heavy rains contributed to the formation of a large sinkhole near several homes. The sinkhole was so deep that some residents were unable to access their properties safely.Complaints were submitted to the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, and last year a contractor was appointed to address the issue.
The community welcomed the intervention, which temporarily resolved the problem. However, following the recent rains, residents say new erosion has occurred downstream, creating fresh sinkholes near other homes. The community shared images with our publication, showing the extent of the damage and the challenges faced in daily life.
One resident explained, “We were happy when the first sinkhole was covered, but now water is causing damage near other houses. It’s worrying for our children and families.”Residents are calling for ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure that drainage issues do not continue to threaten homes and safety.
