Police arrest 17  for festive season crime, drunk driving and drug dealing

Police in Mpumalanga have arrested 17 suspects and issued several fines following intensified Safer Festive Season operations conducted across the Ehlanzeni and Gert Sibande districts this festive season. The operations, carried out by provincial law enforcement teams, form part of ongoing efforts to combat crime, improve public safety, and protect residents and visitors during the busy festive season.

Arrests and Seizures in Ehlanzeni DistrictIn the Ehlanzeni District, seven suspects aged between 25 and 33 were arrested in the Matsulu and Barberton areas for offences including contravention of the Immigration Act, bribery, and dealing in dagga.A further four suspects aged between 26 and 40 were arrested in Bushbuckridge and Mhala for offences including contravention of the Immigration Act and driving under the influence of alcohol. Police also issued seven fines for violations of the Road Traffic Act during the operations.Drug Arrests in Gert Sibande DistrictIn the Gert Sibande District, four suspects were arrested in Wesselton and Ermelo for drug-related offences.

Police seized 620 grams of crystal meth, with an estimated street value of R40 000, and 15 kilograms of Mandrax valued at approximately R5 000.An additional six suspects aged between 29 and 43 were arrested in the Leslie area. Four of the suspects were charged with dealing in drugs and dagga, with the seized drugs estimated to be worth R3 600. Two suspects were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes, while police also issued two fines for contraventions of the Mpumalanga Liquor Act.

Police Commend Operations The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the efforts of the officers involved.“The results show our relentless determination to deal decisively with crime and to ensure the safety of members of the public during the festive season,” Mkhwanazi said.Police have confirmed that Safer Festive Season operations will continue across Mpumalanga to maintain law and order throughout the holiday period.
