ELEPHANTS EDGE CLOSER TO KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK
Four elephants have been spotted roaming near the Zutshwa area in Botswana’s Kgalagadi region — bringing these iconic animals within just 70 kilometres of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP), the only major park under South African National Parks (SANParks) management without elephants. The sighting was confirmed by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) in Botswana, SANParks’ conservation partners in the cross-border management of the KTP.This marks the closest approach of elephants to the park in nearly a decade.
The last recorded sighting dates back to 2015, when a small group of elephants briefly ventured into the area before moving on.While the open landscape of the Kalahari is not traditional elephant habitat, the movement of these animals could signal shifting migration patterns or the expanding range of elephants in southern Botswana.
Visitors to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park are encouraged to remain alert for possible sightings and to share photographs or location details with park officials located at the nearest camp or send it to the Park Manager, Mr Frans van Rooyen via email: frans.vanrooyen@sanparks We urge guests to adhere to the normal park regulations and not exit their vehicles or approach the animals when sighted
