There are few moments in the life of a community that stand out as both symbolic and meaningful. Today, Bakutswe High School experienced one such moment, as the school hall brimmed with pride, applause, and admiration for 13-year-old Thandolwethu Koena Nxiki Mokoena, a young woman determined to make a difference.
Thandolwethu, a Grade 9 learner at Bakutswe High School and a proud resident of Marite, is not your average teenager. She is currently a semi-finalist in the prestigious Face of Mpumalanga Teenager 2025 pageant. Her journey in the world of modeling began at the tender age of four, when she was crowned Miss Vumelane Crèche in 2016. Her confidence and poise have continued to blossom over the years, earning her titles such as 2nd Princess at LM Mokoena 2024 and, most recently, Miss Bakutswe High School 2025.
But today was not about pageant titles. Today was about heart.
Thandolwethu spearheaded a donation drive that culminated in the distribution of 400 sanitary towels to 200 girls at Bakutswe High School. For many learners, access to sanitary products remains a monthly struggle—one that quietly disrupts their education and self-esteem. This act of generosity was more than a kind gesture; it was a mission to restore dignity and provide relief to girls who often suffer in silence.
The atmospheree at the school was electric. Students gathered in anticipation, teachers stood in admiration, and an overwhelming sense of community pride filled the air. Thando, as she is affectionately known, arrived at the school flanked by her biggest supporters—her father, uncle, and spiritual guide, Apostle Percy Maja. Their presence not only demonstrated family support, but it also sent a powerful message about community and unity.
In her heartfelt address, Thandolwethu expressed deep gratitude to everyone who played a role in making the initiative a success.
“I would like to appreciate our sponsors, my parents, my siblings and my pastor for the continuous support and encouragement,” she said, her voice brimming with sincerity. “My humble appreciation also extends to the school management and my fellow scholars for the love and reception.”
She also shared an empowering message that captured the spirit of the day:
“I believe that every girl has a dream and only needs a step and push in the right direction to achieve it.”
Bakutswe High School principal, Mr. Mathebula, commended Thandolwethu’s initiative.
“We are proud to witness one of our own leading with purpose. This is more than just a donation—it’s a powerful example of leadership, empathy, and community service. Thando is truly a role model.”
The donation was well-received by the beneficiaries, who could not hide their excitement. “I feel seen. I feel cared for,” said one of the learners. “Sometimes, we think no one notices our struggles, but today we were reminded that someone does.”
While today was about giving, it was also a reminder that youth leadership comes in many forms!
